PEAT&SMOKE—COMING NOVEMBER 12

PEAT, SMOKE, AND SPIRIT—A TASTE OF ISLAY COMES TO THE WEST COAST

We are excited to present two softly smoked styles of peated whisky that honour old and new in our inaugural Peat & Smoke release on November 12, 2021. Distillers Gordon Glanz and Joel McNichol procured peated malt from Scotland and Washington State, coaxing specific characteristics from each to create two distinguishable whiskies that uniquely express the region from which the peat was sourced.

When seminal vesiculitis is at the chronic phase, patients can also have the symptoms of pulsatile tinnitus then I strongly recommend seeing your speviagra 50 mg t because there maybe an underlying serious medical problem. Your sleep could no prescription sildenafil either make or break a research experiment. The Washington whisky is delicate with a lick of campfire smoke and touch of brininess—it’s the taste of the Pacific Northwest—while the Scottish is much more phenolic and viscous with classic Islay whisky characteristics. Consider Washington a nice gateway to peated whisky, whereas Scottish is a bit more robust and might appeal more to aficionados.

B.C. peated whiskies are extremely rare because B.C. Craft designated distilleries are required to use 100% B.C. agricultural inputs to make their alcohol. Peated whiskies are almost nonexistent in the province except for a few primarily experimental batches. Joel and Gord found a work-around by sourcing peated malt from Scotland and Skagit Valley, Washington and using it to flavour the whisky rather than including it in the mash before fermentation. Craft distilleries are allowed to source outside of the province for botanicals to flavour their products.

Packaged in 375mL bottles at 46% ABV and sold individually for $40, Odd Society Peat & Smoke Whiskies will be available for purchase online November 16, and at the distillery (1725 Powell St., Vancouver) and select private liquor stores starting November 12, 2021.

The mashup of the year: brewer + distiller collaboration whiskies

Odd Society Spirits partners with breweries to make unique whiskies!

We collaborated with four neighbouring breweries to create a series of distinct whiskies that express the individual craft of each partnering brewery. The idea had been percolating for some time but it was set into motion more than three years ago, when Legacy Liquor approached us about creating two celebratory collaboration whiskies in honour of the store’s 10-year anniversary.

The first stages of developing whisky are essentially the same as beer: mashing and fermenting grains. Most of these limited release whiskies were mashed at the brewery and then fermented, distilled and aged at Odd Society. Changing the types of grains in each recipe and the method for aging resulted in four uniquely expressive whiskies.

Our distiller Joel McNichol, was a brewer before he started distilling and had been spending a lot of my time with other brewers. Joel and his friends intended to create something rare and cool together that honours our crafts and our community. And we feel they succeeded.

The partnering breweries in this series are Doan’s Craft Brewing Co., Parallel 49 Brewing, Powell Brewery and Storm Brewing. We will release three of the four collaboration whiskies at the distillery on Thursday, Nov.26, followed by Powell’s in January 2021.

Doan’s Rye Stout Whisky: Doan’s is known for its use of rye in most of its beers and fans of its Rye Stout will appreciate this whisky. The stout recipe calls for chocolate malt—unable to source this particular roast level in B.C., cold-brew coffee from Agro Rosters was used in its place along with as much rye as possible in the mash. This whisky has a heavy roasted nose, dark fruit and chocolate notes with a distinctive stout finish.

P49 Old Boy Single Malt Whisky: Based on the recipe of the Parallel 49 beer of choice of many brewers—Old Boy Classic Brown Ale—this whisky is a more of a traditional single malt with a distinct Old Boy taste of toffee and chocolate.

(SOLD OUT) Storm Black Plague Stout Rye Whisky: Unlike the other two, this whisky was mashed at Odd Society using 100% rye grain. It is a bit of a full-circle release as when we first opened the distillery and didn’t yet have mashing equipment, Storm provided our mash. The spirit was aged in an ex-Storm Brewing Black Plague Stout barrel, which was originally a first fill bourbon barrel that we used to age vodka in. The barrel is back at Storm aging its next Black Plague Stout. We blended the stout barrel-aged whisky with a bit of single malt and the result is a true-to-form dram with a spicy rye nose and anise finish. Not as wild as one might expect from Storm but noteworthy none-the-less.

Powell Street Bourbon Style Corn Whisky: Still aging and not available until January 2021, this whisky was inspired by Powell’s experimental corn California common and is the distillery’s first bourbon style corn whisky. Sourcing the correct corn in B.C. proved difficult but the fine folks at Okanagan Spirits connected us with an Okanagan grown grain corn, which was mashed with B.C. malt and then soured overnight at Powell Street Brewery. The resulting corn mash whisky is still aging in brand new American White Oak barrels at the distillery but taste tests confirm a rich, bourbon-style sweetness.

The first three Odd Society Spirits brewery collaboration whiskies—Doan’s, Parallel 49 and Storm—are priced at $39 (tax included) for a 375 mL bottle and will be available at Odd Society’s distillery (1725 Powell St.) starting Thursday, Nov. 26, and online at shop.oddsocietyspirits.com as of Monday, Nov. 30. As this is an exclusive release we will be limiting purchases to two per person and we can’t accommodate holds. The Doan’s and Parallel 49 whiskies will also be available at Legacy Liquor Store.

New Honey Oaken Gin, + Cocktail Honouring BC’s Top Doctor

UPDATE: We are sold out of Honey Oaken Gin!

We are buzzing over our limited edition Honey Oaken Gin! This honey-barrel-aged gin is an expression of community and craft.

For several years, we have collaborated with Hives for Humanity, a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for connection through bees, to develop barrel-aged honey.

A few years ago, we aged Hives for Humanity East Van Honey in an ex-gin barrel. After the honey was emptied, we experimented by adding our Wallflower Gin back into the barrel. The cask was aged for two years infusing the spirit with heavenly honey flavours. The resulting gin is deliciously unique, beautifully balanced and slightly sweet with light oak overtones.

Thank You! 🤚

We are able to increase production of our hand sanitizer designated for donation to not-for-profits and essential services thanks to a heart-warming outpouring of support from our community.

We have been producing hand sanitizer from distilled ethyl alcohol (ethanol) since the beginning of March. We started with a 20 L batch used to fill 375 mL glass bottles and donated them to not-for-profit organizations within the community who were in need. We have received countless requests but have been unable to complete all of them due to a lack of key ingredients including glycerin and peroxide, as well as smaller bottles needed to stretch our supply in order to reach more people. We put out a call out on social media on March 18, for assistance sourcing scarce ingredients and plastic bottles, and you responded!

Over the course of three weeks, individuals and organizations have been contacting us with offers of support. We have been connected to suppliers and received bottle donations, offers of services and requests to pre-purchase sanitizer for donation to the city’s most vulnerable. We have been able to increase our production to 800 L and have donated 400 L to date and will continue to donate as long as the need exists.

We would especially like to acknowledge the following generous hearts for their contributions:

We are also extremely excited to share that Health Canada approved our application this week! We are now able to increase our production of wholesale sanitizer for essential services in addition to all the donated hand sanitizer we are offering not-for-profit organizations.

Our hand sanitizer recipe follows Word Health Organization guidelines and is 70% ethyl alcohol by volume and contains water, glycerin and hydrogen peroxide. We are hoping to produce sanitizer for retail or personal use in the near future but ingredients are still in short supply and we have a backlog of requests from the frontline to fulfill first. We will update you once that changes.

Hand Sanitizer Update

Hello to our incredibly supportive community—we appreciate your thoughtfulness and offers to help so very much!

We are receiving an immeasurable number of heart-breaking requests for hand sanitizer. While we recognize there is a widespread need, we do not have hand sanitizer available for retail sale or personal use at this time.

Due to the critical need for hand sanitizer resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, we produced 100L based on the WHO approved recipe, and we PRIORITIZED it FOR LOCAL FRONT-LINE and NOT-FOR-PROFIT organizations that work with our most vulnerable population. We do not have anymore available at this time. Our production capabilities have been limited due to a shortage of supplies needed to make and distribute our sanitizer.

Our current supply is all allocated but if you are a not-for-profit or front-line organization and are emailing us to be put on our waitlist, we need the following:
